Obituary for Betta Jean Cox

Betta Jean Cox, 95, daughter of Leonard Clyde & Lois Angeline (Latshaw) Tallman, was born June 10, 1923 in Guthrie County, Iowa. She passed away Thursday, February 14, 2019 at The Lakeside Village, Panora, Iowa.
She lived on the family farm east of Wichita and graduated from Guthrie Center High School. After teaching country school a year, she rode a train to California and worked at Lockheed Corporation serving meals to soldiers. She returned home and married Herman Dean Cox on February 17, 1947 in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. After their marriage, they settled on the farm east of Panora. The young couple raised hogs and chickens and grew crops of soybeans and corn. Betta was known for her huge vegetable garden and flower garden. In 1972, Herman had a brain tumor and was unable to work. Betta became his caregiver and managed the farm operation. Herman died in 1991 and Betta continued to manage the farm until her death.
The couple began hosting friends and neighbors on the farm for an annual watermelon feed in the mid-70’s and one year served 525 people. The couple had no children of their own, but their farm was a favorite spot for nieces and nephews to visit. These visits always included helping with chores and playing with Betta’s cats and Herman’s dogs.
Herman and Betta were avid bowlers. She recalled many trips around the country to bowl in various tournaments. Betta’s highlights were bowling on the TV show “Let’s Go Bowling with Jim Zabel” and bowling on a team that won the State Farm Bureau Tournament.
Betta was an active member in the Panora United Methodist Church for over 70 years. She formed a Bible study group at Lakeside Village.
Betta is survived by 15 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herman, and brothers, sisters, and 3 nieces.
