Obituary for Douglas Darrel Twigg

Douglas Darrel Twigg, 71, son of Robert & Alice (Templeman) Twigg, was born January 7, 1948 in Algona, Iowa. He passed away Friday, June 14, 2019 at his home in Panora, Iowa.

He was raised in Estherville, Iowa and graduated from Estherville High School in 1966. He then went on to graduate from Iowa Lakes Community College in 1968. Doug’s first job was working for the Des Moines Register and later for the City of Estherville. While attending ILCC he worked for Reese-Henry Funeral Home when he decided to be a Funeral Director. He attended the Milwaukee School of Mortuary Science and graduated in 1969. He returned to Estherville to serve his internship with Reese-Henry Funeral Homes.

On July 6, 1969, he married his high school sweetheart, Kathy Barnes. They made their home in Estherville and Ringsted while working for Reese-Henry. They became parents of Curtis in 1971 and Craig in 1973. Doug moved his family to Clarksville, IA and later to Keokuk, IA where he worked for SCI. A daughter Jennifer was born in 1977. Doug was transferred to Waterloo and later to Fort Dodge around 1984, where they lived for 16 years and he was the manager for Bruce’s Funeral Home. In August of 2000, Doug purchased the Beidelman Funeral Homes in Panora and Guthrie Center. Curtis and his family joined his parents in the move. In October of 2010, Craig joined the family business. Doug worked as long as he could with his sons until around 2015, when his health wouldn’t allow it anymore.

Doug was active in the First United Methodist Church in Guthrie Center and the Lions Club. He also served on the trustee board at the Guthrie County Hospital.
Doug enjoyed woodworking while living in Fort Dodge. He made 2 baby cradles and rocking horses for his grandchildren, a pie case, and lots of shelves. While living in Fort Dodge, they enjoyed taking walks, bicycle rides, and family boating vacations to Okoboji. He loved watching his children and grandchildren play in their sports. When he moved to Guthrie Center, he would say he got his exercise in every morning by walking to get the newspaper, which was only a block away. Doug and Kathy did walk around the fairgrounds many evenings.

Doug is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Kathy; sons, Curtis (Becky) Twigg of Panora and Craig Twigg of Guthrie Center; daughter, Jennifer (Raj) Puri of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren, Bryce (Dustin Bart-Williams) Richardson, Mathison Twigg, Morgan (Conner Meinecke) Twigg, Andrew Puri, Ayden Puri; step-granddaughter, Reetika Puri; brother, Derwood Twigg of Maple Grove, MN; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dennis Twigg,Theodore Twigg, brother-in-law Kenneth Stewart, niece Amy Barnes, and nephew David Twigg.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, Guthrie Center. Private family burial will be held in the West Cemetery, Panora, prior to the funeral services. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 18, 2019 from 5-7 P.M. at the Twigg Funeral Home, Panora, Iowa.
