Obituary for Lois Lillian Van Cleave

Lois Van Cleave, 80, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at the Guthrie County Hospital, Guthrie Center, Iowa.

Lois was born on March 12, 1939, to John and Carmelita (Schulte) Reisberg in Carroll, Iowa. She attended St. Augustine Catholic School in Halbur and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in Carroll in 1957. She married Raymond Tunning on October 5, 1957, at St. Augustine Church in Halbur. She and Ray farmed in Dedham until moving to a farm west of Guthrie Center in 1968. They lived and farmed there until Ray’s death in 1996 and Lois moved to Guthrie Center thereafter. Lois and Ray raised four children together, Rick, Sheyrl, Brenda and Mark. Their son, John, died at the age of 2.

Lois married George Van Cleave on April 6, 2006, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guthrie Center. Lois and George were lucky to find each other and spend over 13 years together.

Lois was hard working, resourceful and creative. She worked the farm with Ray, kept the books, cooked, gardened, crafted and sewed. She solved many problems with her own ingenuity and cured many ailments with home remedies like “Maggie’s Balm” and her own “Farm Hand” lotion. She loved fishing, traveling, camping at Springbrook and the Iowa State Fair, playing cards and having fun with family and friends. She also loved helping out wherever help was needed. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guthrie Center for over fifty years and a member of the Alter and Rosary Society there. Over the years she was a proud member of the Guthrie Center Red Hats, a faithful volunteer in the secretary’s office at the Guthrie County Fair and a board member of the Guthrie County Hospital and the New Homestead. Lois’ greatest love and joy was her family and she remained very close with her children and grandchildren.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ray, and son, John, as well as a brother, Harold Reisberg, a sister, Marian Goodnight, and her beloved granddaughter Megan Sloss.

She is survived by her husband, George Van Cleave; sisters, Lorraine Schieffer, Eileen Halbur and Joni Plant; her children, Rick (Judy) Tunning, Sheyrl (Paul) Clark, Brenda (Curt) Sloss and Mark (Gwen) Tunning; grandchildren, Kyle Sloss, Meghan (Jake) Langel, Andrea (T.J.) Redfern, Tyler Tunning, Travis Clark, Ashley Tunning, Spencer Sloss, Dustin Clark, Marissa Tunning, Jacob Tunning and Madison Tunning; great-grandchildren, Kroy and Brylon Redfern and Ben, Charlie, and Sam Langel; and a community of long-time friends and extended family. She was one of a kind and will be missed by all who knew her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 22, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guthrie Center, with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, rural Guthrie Center. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 21, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center, with a Vigil service at 6:30 P.M.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
