Obituary for Nora Steensen

Nora Steensen, age 92, passed away peacefully in her Grapevine, Texas home on April 13, 2019.  The only daughter of John and Dora Feeney. Nora was born in Manchester, England on December 7, 1926.

Nora trained as a stenographer and met her late husband, Merrill Steensen, while he was stationed in England during World War II and she was serving in the British Army. After their marriage in England, they made their home on a farm outside of Guthrie Center, Iowa where they raised their four children.

Nora moved to West Des Moines, Iowa after the death of her husband Merrill and eventually moved to Texas in 1993 to be closer to family. Her daughter Michele and son Kevin looked after her on a daily basis during her last years. Before moving to Texas, Nora worked as an audiologist for Guthrie County Schools and for Dr. Updegraff and later at the Chocolate Story Book, both located in Des Moines.  After moving to Texas, she clerked at her local Target store so she could meet people.

Nora was a loving mother, wife, and daughter, who enjoyed life to the fullest and always put everyone before herself. She will be remembered for her generosity, kindness, unconditional love and laughter.  She loved a good joke, loved to travel, entertain family and friends, play bridge, read and do crafts, especially knitting. An avid reader, a good book was her best friend.  She was a member of The British Girls Club in Grapevine TX and a P. E.O.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sons-in-law, Jim Brotherton and Steven Arendt. She is survived by her children Sherry Arendt, Kevin Steensen, Denise Letcher, Michele Brotherton, and her son-in-law Fred Letcher and one grandson, John Brotherton, her step-grandchildren Rob, Jimmy, and Amy and their families plus several nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
