Obituary for Richard "Dick" Eugene Kunce

Richard Eugene Kunce, was better known as Dick, 76, son of Warren & Virginia (Mills) Kunce, was born March 18, 1943 in Jefferson, Iowa. He passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
He was raised on a farm outside of Yale. Dick helped his father, Warren, milk cows, feed cattle, raise hogs, and do field work. His mother, Virginia, had him help with chicken chores and pulling weeds in the garden. He was encouraged to work hard by the suggestion that maybe they would go fishing when the work was completed.
Dick attended school in Yale and graduated in 1961. He attended one year of college at NW Missouri State majoring in accounting. His ability to work with numbers was an asset throughout his life.
Dick married Gweneth Clark in 1963 and they had 2 children, Jimmie Kunce and Jeanette Kunce. In 1973, Claudette Hamilton became Dick’s wife and Josh Kunce became part of the family. Claudette died of cancer.
When Josh was 4 years old, he attended Head Start in Panora. The Head Start teacher was Nancy Stetzel. Dick and Nancy enjoyed talking to each other about their individual interests in the great outdoors. That was the beginning of a wonderful love story. Dick and Nancy were married in 1997. They spent 21 years working together as a team. Two sets of children were blended into one loving family.
In 1968, Dick opened a sporting goods store in Yale. He also managed the Bays Branch Concession area. A job became available for Dick at the John Deere factory in Ankeny. He worked on various machines at John Deere but the majority of his 31 years there was spent chrome plating cotton picker spindles.
Dick loved being outdoors. He loved trapping, hunting, fishing, and traveling. He always wanted to buy one more fishing lure and plan one more fishing trip, especially if it involved fishing for muskies.
Left to cherish the memory of Dick Kunce are his wife, Nancy; son, Jimmie (Mary) Kunce; daughter, Jeanette Kunce (Dan Gronke); son, Josh Kunce (Amy Jabaay); son, Scott (Paula) Stetzel; daughter, Dawn Stetzel; son, Brett Stetzel. Children who will miss their Grandpa are Ashton Kunce, Addyson Stetzel, Isaac Stetzel, and Ian Stetzel. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Twigg Funeral Home, Panora, Iowa. Burial will be in the Yale Cemetery, Yale, Iowa. Visitation will be Friday, March 29, 2019 from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Monarch Watch, University of Kansas, 1200 Sunnyside Ave., Lawrence, KS 66045 (
