Obituary for Robert "Bob" Wayne Hayes

Robert “Bob” Wayne Hayes the son of Charles and Erma (Marshman) Hayes was born on February 29, 1932. Bob passed away on August 22, 2019 at the age of 87 years (21 yrs. If only counting birthdays) at the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center.

Bob attended country school in his younger years and graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1949. After graduation he helped on the family farm with his parents and his brother Frank until being drafted to the Army and serving in the Korean War from 1952-1954. Upon returning from the war with an honorable discharge he started farming on his own North of Guthrie Center until he retired. He was a long standing member of The American Legion Post #124.

He met and married Dolly Virginia Seeley on February 4, 1957. They had four children, Randal Eugene, Ricky Lynn, Judy Kay and Russel Wayne. Bob loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always willing to help them out in any way he could.

Bob farmed all of his life, with his wife at his side, loving to be outdoors working in the sun and caring for the many animals that he raised throughout the years. He grew corn and soybeans. But also bailed hay for his livestock. He and Dolly always had a large garden, living off of the land he loved. They preserved much of what they grew to use throughout the year. Bob’s favorite things to grow in the garden and eat were sweet corn, tomatoes, peas and potatoes, watermelon and muskmelon…his favorites.

Bob also enjoyed traveling and fishing especially after retirement, many times going to Minnesota and Branson Missouri. They always took their dog, Milo, with them. Bob had a special love for Milo and Milo always watched out for Bob especially when Bob’s health started to decline. Milo was right by his side making sure he was ok.

When Bob’s health declined to the point that he needed additional help to walk in 2016 he went to the Thomas Rest Haven to reside. After several months of adjustment he fast became the staffs favorite resident. His winning smile and jovial orneriness won over everyone including other resident’s families. His smile earned him many cookies, ice cream and snickers candy bars, his favorite snacks. He was known to the staff as “Farmer” after one Nurse Aide called him that to get him to smile. He began calling her “Gabby” and this grew to be a special friendship.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, sons Randal (Glenda), Rick, Russel and daughter Judy (David) Long. Grandchildren Cody (Ruthann) Hayes, Christopher (Rachel) Long and Tylor Long. Great-grandchildren Ayden White, Emma, Rylan and Kayson Hayes, one niece and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Erma, brother Frank, and nephew John Hayes.Bob will be greatly missed by many family and friends.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday August 27, 2019 at the Faith Bible Church in Panora, Iowa where he was a member for many years. Visitation will also be at the Faith Bible Church on Monday August 26, 2019 from 5-7 P.M.
