Obituary for Roger Dean Chalfant

Roger Dean Chalfant, son of Charlie and Vera (Fisher) Chalfant, was born on October 14, 1927, in Guthrie Center, Iowa. After completing high school at Guthrie Center, he enlisted with the Navy. He completed his training in San Diego, California and proudly served from 1945-1947 as a Motor Machinist’s Mate, and was in the naval reserves from 1947-1952. He also received a Victory Medal World War II.

On October 14, 1950, he married Shirley Petersen at The Little Brown Church. To this union one son, Randy was born on May 11, 1954. In 1958, they purchased the family farm and lived there for over 60 years, during which the farm was certified as a Heritage Farm. He milked dairy cows and raised hogs as well as crops. He loved the land and farming. In addition, he also did construction work and was part of the crew that built the Guthrie County Hospital. He was hard working and took great pride in his work.

They moved from the farm to Guthrie Center in 2012 where they lived until July 2019, when they moved into the New Homestead where he resided until his death on October 20, 2019.

Roger was a member of the American Legion Post 124 for over 60 years. He also served on the Guthrie County Fair Board and was a 4-H leader for many years. He enjoyed meeting with the coffee group and participating in a card club for many years. He and Shirley enjoyed attending school activities and events or anything involving their granddaughters. He was always happy to see new pictures of his great-grandchildren and asking for the latest updates on them. In retirement, he continued to enjoy doing small woodworking projects, having coffee with friends, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Colleen Chalfant,
granddaughters, Stephanie (Hugo) Ayala of Brea, CA and Sara (Randy) Blockhus of Altoona, IA; three great-grandchildren, Lauren and Vera Ayala and Oliver Blockhus; and six nieces and nephews. Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; son Randy, brothers and sisters-in-law; Donald and Vera Chalfant and Melvin and Erma Chalfant. He will be missed by many other family and friends.
