Obituary for Martha Marie Gittins
Martha Marie Gittins, 91, daughter of Elmer & Clarena (Kimm) Marean, was born May 12, 1928 in Adair County, Iowa. She passed away Monday, November 11, 2019 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. Martha graduated from Guthrie Center High School. In 1948, she married Bernard Gittins at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guthrie Center, Iowa. They made their home in Guthrie Center until 1967 when they moved to Stuart. She worked at the Guthrie County State Bank and then for 25 years for Iowa Electric. Martha and Bernard started the Stuart horse sale in 1966. Martha enjoyed playing cards, sudoku, sewing, gardening, cooking, homemade bread and cherry bars were family favorites and helping with congregate meals in Stuart. She also enjoyed watching Iowa mens and women’s college basketball and wheel of fortune. She was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart where she was very active. Martha is survived by her children, Marian Jean Gomez of Bedford, IA; Mark Douglas (Laura) Gittins of Magnolia, TX; and Dianne (Larry) Dawson of Adel; 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, & 4 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Foshe of Minnesota; Marge Kessler of Des Moines; & Joyce Shaffer of Des Moines; brother, Donald Marean of West Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bernard, grandson Brian Gomez, brothers Allen & Robert, and sisters Norma & Maxine. Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, November 16, 2019 at the All Saints Catholic Church, Stuart. Burial of her cremains will be in Calvary Cemetery, Stuart. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the services at the church. Memorials may be left to the Stuart Congregate Meals Program.
