Obituary for Lawrence Edward Edgington

Lawrence Edward Edgington was born on September 29, 1933 on a farm west of Guthrie Center. He passed away and into the arms of his lord & savior on January 7, 2020 at his home in Panora, surrounded by a family who adored him. Lawrence was born the eldest of 9 children to Letha (Harwood) Simmons. His biological father, Elmo Edgington, passed away when he was just 3 years old & Lawrence was raised by Letha & his step-father Max Simmons. On February 26, 1954 he was united in marriage to Darlene Bates on the family farm east of Guthrie Center.
Lawrence started his farming career doing custom farm work and In 1968 he purchased his first farm in Casey, IA,. Lawrence had 320 + acres where he farmed and raised various livestock and ran a grade A dairy farm. In 1979 he bought the old home place east of Guthrie Center and later purchased the Hardware store in Panora, operating Edmonds Hardware with his brothers. Before retiring Lawrence ran a farm operation at Fansler in Guthrie County.
Lawrence never knew a stranger and he never held a grudge. He would give anyone his last nickel and he did so, literally, more than once. His greatest joy was providing for his family. He loved animals and living in the country. He was a John Wayne fan and could rewatch his favorite western shows time and time again. He could spend hours sharing his farm stories with anyone that would listen and these lively conversations will be one of the things that we will miss most. His gentle and selfless demeanor as well as his head strong, stubborn personality never wavered even in the face of his failing health over the last several years.
Lawrence’s legacy spans 4 generations. Those left to hold his memory close include his wife of 65 years Darlene, their 5 children, 29 grandkids and 37 great grandkids.
They include his son Lawrence Edgington Jr (Beverly Edgington) and their children Jennifer (Wes) Conrad, Megan Edgington (Mike Hassett) and children Mallory, Kaden, Kandice & Braxton. Mandy Hayes (Billy Bonar) and children Joseph, Carson, Reece, Myra, Mayze & Benin. Roxanne (Sam) Hochstetler and children Trinity, Zoey, Lydia, Kylee, & Harmony. Arlynd (Hope) Edgington and children Parker & Lincoln.
His daughter Linda (Larry) Wall and their son Cody Wall & his daughter Paige.
His son Mark (Kaylee) Edgington and their children Roy, Dillon, Morgan, Ryan, Madison, Jaydeson, Jaython, & Kaylinn. Jon Edgington and his children Farrah, Payton & Kennedy. Mariah (Cherokee) Edgington. Katie (Matt) Fitzsimmons and children Lilah & Holsten.
His son Andrew (Lori) Edgington and their family, Alicia Wedemeyer (Alex Husk) and children Stryker, Emmett, Violet, Arya. Aaron Edgington and son Madden. Amy (Jarael Madyun) Edgington. Angela Edgington. Vickie (Ryan Guyer) Welker and Grace Welker.
His daughter Cindy Wasson and her family, Ashley (Clint) Toben and children Landon & Lennon, Chelsey (Austin) Miller and children Adrian, Lexia & Mia. Levi Wasson.
And the granddaughter they raised Steph (Troy) Reinhart and their children Maddyson, Layne, Nathan, Collin, Emma & Ellis.
Other survivors include siblings Bob (Faye) Edgington, Malcom (Nancy) Simmons, Keith (Barbara) Simmons, Dr. Barbara Moats, Craig (Shirley) Simmons, Merlin (Bert) Simmons, Joyce (David) Anderson. His brother in law Wilbur (Susan) Bates and sister in law Sharon (Pete) Eveland as well as many many nieces, nephews & extended family members.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Elmo Edgington and Letha & Max Simmons. Infant brother, Gary Simmons. His in-laws Don & Verna Bates and his brothers in law Don Bates Jr and Bill Bates. Special thank you to Kindred Hospice Panora and for the many dedicated healthcare professionals who cared so diligently for Lawrence through the years.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the Twigg Funeral Home, Panora. Burial will be in Moffitt Grove Cemetery, rural Guthrie Center. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
